What’s on Sale in October

Nancy Patterson September 26, 2012 Easy Street No Comments on What’s on Sale in October

I’m not losing my mind. I know there are still a few days left in the month of September.  But I want to talk to you about October.

Knowing when to buy things has always been a topic that interests me. If you can save money by knowing when to buy this or that, why wouldn’t you do it? Some items are cheaper to buy because of the time of the year. Blueberries are cheaper to buy in summer than they are in the winter.  Buying a refrigerator in June will save you more money than if you buy one in November. You’ll get a better deal on luggage in March than you will any other time of year.

The month of October is a weird time for retailers.  It’s sandwiched between Back-to School sales and Christmas, which makes it kind of a slow time. People have just spent a bunch of money in September and know that they need to start saving their money for the upcoming holiday gift giving season. In addition, most retailers start to save up their advertising bucks for the upcoming holiday season so sales, promotions and specials can be a bit hard to find this month.

I don’t want you to have difficulty bargain hunting this month so I’ve compiled a list of items that are super cheap this month.  You won’t find deals this good until next year!

Small Home Electronics

Late September and October are the second busiest months in the bridal season. Many items that were on bridal registries get marked down this time of year. Expect to find small home electronics like blenders, coffee makers, waffle irons, and such marked down 25-40 percent. For the same reason you can also find good deals on silverware, glasses, bedding, napkins, and other things typically found on bridal registries.

Winter Clothing

October is the very first month you will start to see promotions and sales for winter apparel. They roll out the items in late August and about six to eight weeks later, the price cuts begin.  The discounts will continue over the next few months but the selection will be the best right now. Temperatures haven’t cooled down enough to start wearing gloves, hats and snow boots yet so people haven’t rushed out to scoop them up yet. This month you can expect to start seeing clothing marked down 10-20 percent off the original price.

Diamonds

October is a good month to buy a diamond because you’ll never find a better selection than right now. The more choices you have, the better deal you can get and the happier you will be with your final purchase. Beginning in October jewelry stores beef up their inventory to get ready for the high volume holiday season. If you wait till November or December to buy an engagement ring or diamond earrings your choices will be a lot more limited. If price is your main motivation though wait till the summer to buy diamond encrusted jewelry. Summer time is the slowest time of the year for jewelers so they are probably more willing to make a deal during this time. The problem is that the quality of the jewel will be a lot lower than other times of the year. In October you get high quality and the best selection of jewels.

Summer Sporting Equipment

Items like baseball gloves, tennis rackets, bikes and golf clubs are getting severely marked down this month. Why? No one’s buying them right now. Fall is a great time to get a great deal on summer sports equipment. If you know your child is going to be playing baseball, tennis, golf, or any other summer sport next year buy their equipment now to get 30-40 percent off. Just make sure that whatever you buy them now will still fit them in six months!

Swim suits and Resort Wear

For the same reason, now is a good time to buy a bathing suit. You get the best deals on items when you buy it in the off season. October is a great time to save money on swim suits and beach ware because summer is over and winter is on its way in.

You can expect to see discounts as high as 75 percent for women’s beach clothing. Price cuts on men’s summer items tend to be a bit more modest, topping out at discounts as high as 50 percent.

The annoying part is that all of the summer clothing will be displayed on poorly organized racks. You’ll have to dig through piles and piles to find something you like and in your size. To combat this I suggest you shop online. On many store’s websites you can limit your views to items only in your size. That way you won’t fall in love with something only to find out they don’t have any more in your size.

European Vacations

The tourist season officially closes in September. But some vacationers still remain. By October everyone is gone and the prices get cheap.

October is a great time to visit Paris, Rome, Seville, London, or any other popular European destinations. Flights that would have cost $2000 in the summer get slashed by 50 percent or more! Plus there aren’t any crowds to contend with, no lines to wait in at tourist attractions, better service and the weather is still nice. Look for cheap flights and hotel rooms across Europe this month.

Grills, Outdoor Furniture and Lawnmowers

You’ve probably begun to think about storing away the grill and lawnmower and covering up your patio furniture at this point. Soon there will be snow on the ground and these things will be of no use to you.  That’s why if you know next season you’ll need a new one, now is the time to buy it!

Retailers are trying desperately to clear out their remaining inventory of summer items to make room for snow blowers, shovels and other winter gear. So they’ve dropped the prices on grills, lawnmowers, patio furniture and other summer related accessories. Check the circular for promotions and visit your local home improvement store to get a great deal on summer’s accessories.  Don’t wait too long though; by the end of October whatever hasn’t sold will be removed.

Locally Grown Food

Its harvest time for farmers! October is a great because you can save a boat-load of money on your food bill this month. To save money, eat local. The longer your food has to travel to get to you, the more it costs. While items will vary depending on where you live, these foods are in season right now and therefore cheaper this month:

*    Apples

*    Broccoli

*    Brussel Sprouts

*    Cabbage

*    Cauliflower

*    Cranberries

*    Cucumbers

*    Dates

*    Fennel Grapes

*    Greens

*    Iceberg Lettuce

*    Mushrooms

*    Nuts

*    Okra

Enjoy all the great bargains this month!
